ANGIE DVORAK KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT PERRY COUNTY CHAMBER’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS AWARDS BANQUET
The Catfish Wagon Restaurant was the site of the Perry County Chamber Christmas Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 6, 2005. More than 150 people were present for this outstanding program. The keynote speaker was Angie Dvorak, President of the Area Development Partnership in Hattiesburg. Her comments were both humorous and informative.
Ms. Dvorak gave us an overview of the ADP’s representation of Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties. She indicated that when a proposal was submitted to a prospective client looking to locate in this area, the ADP forwards a proposal that includes information on all industrial parks and infrastructure that makes up this 3-county area. Only a very small percentage of these proposals are ever acted upon. With all the information reaching us about the Department of Energy’s proposal regarding the utilization of the Richton Salt Dome, she quickly gained our interest. The Department of Energy estimates that a strategic petroleum storage representing 16% of our national storage capacity could be located within the confines of the Richton Salt Dome. This project would only utilize one-eighth of the capacity of the Dome itself. Therefore, there is a good possibility that other developments could take place, i.e. natural gas storage. This has been an area of interest of several companies over the past decade.
One of the assets to the Richton Salt Dome was the feasibility study that was accomplished in 1992 at a cost of approximately $20 million. This study puts us in a very competitive position in that our “homework” has already been done and this is a cost that will not reoccur. If this site is chosen, it will cost approximately $1 billion to construct. This would be a tremendous shot in the arm to the local economy of Perry County.
Ms. Dvorak’s challenge to the residents of Perry County was to get “fired up” and support the Perry County Chamber of Commerce, utilizing it as one voice for all in Perry County. It is not just an opportunity but the duty, obligation and responsibility for each person to be in a position to promote Perry County’s assets.
Ms. Dvorak’s closing remarks focused on individual responsibilities and she stated, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” We all need to be eager to build the community through commitment, diligence and hard work.
